Shopper numbers: high street footfall index annual change in the UK 2014-2016 This statistic shows the percentage change in the number of visitors to high street retail environments ('footfall') in the United Kingdom (UK) compared the same month a year earlier, from January 2014 to March 2016. Throughout 2014, high street footfall was generally lower than in 2013. March 2014 saw the only increase, with a 2.6 percent rise in footfall compared to the same period one year ago. Footfall defined means the counting of shoppers in a physical environment. This refers to the number of people walking into a shop or shopping center. This can be useful to shops to determine various metrics such as Average Value Transaction. Counting footfall can be useful when wanting to increase sales and for understanding why and what the shopper is thinking. Retailers can also use this system to determine which times the shop is most frequented, which part of the shop the customer goes to and ultimately to optimize store performance.
Large shopping center institutions such as Intu Group use footfall to asses which of its locations is performing well.
