Los Angeles Clippers – additional information
The Los Angeles Clippers franchise was founded in 1970 when the team were known as the ‘Buffalo Braves’ based in New York’s second largest city Buffalo. Only eight years later the team moved to San Diego in California and their name changed to the San Diego Clippers in order to acknowledge their new home. The addition of ‘Clippers’ is believed to come from the sailing ships which passed through the city’s bay. Six years later in 1984, the team would be on the move again, approximately 120 miles north to Los Angeles and the renowned Staples Center where the team would go through its third and final name change to become the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Los Angeles Clippers franchise of the National Basketball Association was valued at 205 million U.S. dollars in 2003 but this figure rose to 575 million U.S. dollars according to Forbes’ valuations. The Clippers play their home games in LA’s Staples Center which they share their successful and fierce rivals the Los Angeles Lakers who have as of 2014 have 16 Championships, 31 Conference titles and 23 Division titles to their name. Success has unarguably contributed to their franchise’s value. In 2014, in comparison to the Clippers franchise value, the LA Lakers franchise was worth 1350 million U.S. dollars.
The Clippers however have shared some success of their own after winning their first Division title in 2013, a title they defended in the consecutive season of 2014. This recent success appears to have influenced the pricing of the team’s average ticket price. For the 2013/14 season the price of an average ticket to see the Clippers was 65.55 dollars, up from 51.47 for the 2011/12.
