Average daily trade amount on London Stock Exchange 2015-2023

The average number of daily trades made on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) massively jumped in March of 2020. Over 1,900 companies currently trade on the LSE. Since the coronavirus pandemic, the total market value of companies trading on the LSE has fallen significantly, before rising again in late 2020 to reach just over one million in early 2021. In December 2021, the value had fallen again to 797,175. In the first months of 2022, the average daily number of trades exceeded one million again, before fallen back to 502.99 in July 2023.

Going public

Going public is the process of a private companies initial public offering (IPO) to sell its stocks publicly. This process is often used by companies that are looking to generate capital in order to grow. In 2022, Switzerland-based natural resource company Glencore saw the largest IPO during the year onto the London Stock Exchange.

As of early 2023, the London Stock Exchange was in the top ten largest stock exchange worldwide. The largest stock exchange in the world is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
