Total fertility rate (TFR) in Scotland from 2000 to 2017 (per 1,000 of population)*

Scotland: total fertility rate 2000-2017 This statistic shows the total fertility rate in Scotland from 2000 to 2017. The rate was at its lowest in 2002, before peaking in 2008 at 1.76. Overall the total fertility rate increased slightly from 1.48 to 1.53 children that would be born to the average woman according to age-specific fertility. This development is reflected in the Scottish general fertility rate which captures the total number of live births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44. In 2008, the general fertility rate of women in Scotland was highest at 56.4 live births per 1,000 women, meaning roughly every eighteenth woman had given birth that year. In 2015, the general fertility rate amounted to 53.2 live births, having risen by 4 live births per 1,000 women since 2000. In contrast, the total fertility rate in the United Kingdom was marginally higher, having grown from 1.78 to 1.83 children that a woman would bare if she experienced the age-specific fertility rates of the calendar year in question throughout her childbearing lifespan.
