This statistic shows the research and development intensity of biotechnology companies in selected countries for 2021 (or latest year available - 2020). As of that year, U.S. biotech R&D in the enterprise sector was around 0.7 percent of the total industry value added.

Note: Values are for 2021 or latest year available (2020). For some countries, 2022 values were already available. R&D intensity defined as a percentage of industry value added.
For Austria and Germany, only dedicated biotech R&D firms are included.
For the Russian Federation, a proxy indicator is used: R&D expenditure in Life Sciences (before 2011 - Living Systems), which include bioengineering, biocatalysis, biosynthesis and biosensor technologies, biomedical and veterinary technologies, genomics and pharmaco-genetics, living cell technologies.
For the United States, beginning in 2018, statistics are for companies that performed or funded $50,000 or more of R&D. For 2021, the Census Bureau has reviewed the data product for unauthorized disclosure of confidential information and has approved the disclosure avoidance practices applied.
For Canada, this includes medical biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and agricultural biotechnology.
For Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Lithuania, the 2021 value added was used for calculation.
For Latvia, this includes medical biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and agricultural biotechnology.
