Movie theater attendance in France 2003-2018

In 2018, more than 209 million cinema tickets were sold in France. Since the beginning of the 2000s, the number of cinema ticket sold in the country keeps increasing. That same year, France was the European country with the highest number of cinema admissions, ranked before more populous countries like Russia or Germany.

A growing industry

Just like the number of ticket sales, the number of screens has increased in the country and reached the number of 5,842 seats in 2016, compared to 5,469 in 2009. In 2017, there were approximately 11 thousand inhabitants per cinema screen in France. Ireland was the only European country with a lower number of inhabitants per screen. But screens are not the only increasing element within the French cinema industry: the number of feature films produced in France is also growing. Proud of its so-called “cultural exception”, France produced 222 national feature movies in 2017, while local movies represent a significant part of ticket sales in the country.

Moviegoers in France

In a survey from 2018, almost 21 percent of French people declared that they went to the movies once every month. Despite the development of online streaming, the French seem to enjoy the experience of going to a movie theater. That same year, Avengers: Infinity War, the most successful movie in France, generated a box office revenue of more than 47 million dollars. If elderly viewers enjoy French movies more, it appears that younger generations have a clear preference for American ones.
