This statistic presents information on the number of Twitter users in the United States as of February 2016, sorted by age group. During the survey period it was found that 12.4 million U.S. Twitter users were between 25 and 34 years old. The total Twitter audience in the United States amounted to 56.8 million users. In the beginning of 2015, microblogging platform Twitter surpassed 300 million monthly active users and is one of the most popular social networks worldwide. Currently, Asia and North America represent the biggest user share but experts project that in 2018, Twitter’s user base will be predominantly located in Asia. Twitter is an important tool for social media usage during events – for many viewers, live-tweeting during events has become an important part of media consumption. The Oscars ranked fist as the most popular television special on Twitter in 2014 with 13.92 million Twitter users live-tweeting during the telecast. Following brands and celebrities through Twitter is a popular activity on the social network – a 2014 survey revealed that 28 percent of Twitter users had visited a celebrity’s Twitter feed. As of spring 2015, the most popular Twitter account was @Katyperry, who had amassed more than 66 million followers on the social network. Popular brands on Twitter include Starbucks, Apple and Victoria’s Secret.
