In 2023, the Bank of England received almost 14,000 reimbursement applications for damaged banknotes. The main reason for reimbursement claims were torn or partial notes. Approximately 8,500 of all claims pertained to torn notes or partial notes. Further 1,900 banknotes were damaged in a fire or flood.
