Counterfeit euro banknotes out of circulation in Europe and the world 2014-2019

This statistic illustrates the main areas in which counterfeit euro banknotes were found and subsequently withdrawn from circulation from the second half of 2014 to the first half of 2019. It can be seen that the majority of counterfeit euro notes were found in Eurozone countries up until the first half of 2019, ranging between 89 and 98 percent. As of the first half of 2019, 97.2 percent of counterfeit euro notes were withdrawn from circulation in euro area countries, with a further 2.1 percent being found in other EU member states outside the euro area.
During the first half of 2019 a total of 251 thousand counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation, over 80 percent of which were denominations of 20 euros and 50 euros notes.
