Insurance firms in Europe 2017-2021, by gross written premiums
In 2021, the biggest European insurance group by premiums written was the French company Axa, with almost 100 billion euros. The term premiums written refers to the amount paid by customer for the insurance coverage on the policies issued and is therefore an indicator for the company's earnings. Out of 15 companies, only four saw an increase in premiums written between 2019 and 2020, likely due to the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In terms of leading insurance markets in Europe, the United Kingdom ranked first with the highest value of premiums written, unsurprisingly followed by France and Germany.
