Electricity prices for households in Romania 2010-2020, semi-annually

The electricity prices for households in Romania registered a slight increase from 2010 to 2020. The average electricity price for households peaked in the first semester of 2020, amounting to 14.59 eurocents per kWh. However, only a fifth of the electrical energy generated in Romania was destined for household consumption in 2020, most of it being directed towards industry consumption.

Nuclear energy

When it comes to nuclear energy, Romania has two nuclear reactors which generated approximately one fifth of the country’s electricity in 2019. The first nuclear power reactor started operating in 1996, while the second one began its activity in 2007. By 2018, the nuclear electricity generation in Romania amounted to 11.3 TWh. Since 2008, there were discussions concerning the possibility of building two more nuclear reactors at Cernavoda in partnership with China General Nuclear Power Group. However, in January 2020, the Romanian government decided to abandon the project. Nevertheless, when surveyed, most Romanians believed that the additional nuclear reactors should be built in partnership with the European Union and not with China.

Energy consumption

In 2019, money still played a more important part in the individual’s behavior regarding energy consumption than the protection of the environment did. As a result, reducing financial costs was the main reason for Romanians’ energy saving behavior. Nevertheless, energy prices were a more significant concern for the population than the impact of energy consumption on the environment. .
