Comparison of energy consumption for energy purposes in the UK 1970-2017 This statistic depicts the shift of energy consumption for energy purposes by final users in the United Kingdom (UK) from 1970 to 2017. In 1970, the industry sector (including iron and steel) had the greatest level of consumption, with 43 percent of total final energy consumption. Since 1970 this sector has steadily reduced its consumption, falling to 17 percent of total final consumption in 2017. Transport now accounts for the greatest share of consumption, at 40 percent.
