Online vs offline: prefered place of purchase of French consumers 2013

 In a survey conducted in 2013 on purchasing habits of French people, 76 percent of the respondents declared preferring purchasing at a brick-and-mortar store (or its dedicated online shop) rather than from a pure play e-commerce website.  

Online and offline purchasing habits

   The results of the Statista Global Consumer Survey from early 2019 reveal that four out of ten French consumers preferred to purchase products like clothing, cultural goods or consumer electronics online. On the other hand, pharmacy products or food products were preferably bought in physical stores according to French surveyed in 2018. Furthermore, about a quarter of respondents to a 2019 Barometer stated also having cross-channel purchase habits and using drive-ins.   

Growing online purchase types

   Although food products still are something French consumers prefer to buy in physical shops, the penetration rate of online grocery shopping slightly increased in the past years: from 13 percent of internet users in 2014 up to 17 percent in 2018. Another growing online buying practice is making C2C (consumer-to-consumer) purchases online: in a study from 2017, the share of C2C e-buyers increased from 17 in 2015 up to 29 percent.
