Volume of wine produced in Romania 2010-2022

Approximately 3.9 million hectoliters of wine were produced in Romania in 2022. The country ranked as the seventh biggest wine producer in Europe in the same year.

Wine varieties

One of the most famous varieties of wine grape in Romania is Feteasca Regală, accounting for the largest vineyard surface area. Similarly to Chardonnay, Feteasca Regală is a semi-aromatic variety, well-known and highly produced since the communist regime. An annual survey on wine consumption in Romania revealed that Feteasca Neagră was the most consumed variety of wine. It is a high-quality red wine, considered to be one of the oldest wine varieties both in Romania and Europe, characterized by its intense ruby color and complex flavor, comparable with that of currants, blackberries, or prunes.

Wine-related events

Events such as wine promotions, wine salons, or wine tastings, are popular in Romania, with six out of ten people saying they had attended such an event and enjoyed the experience. One of the most famous wine events is the annual RO-Wine (International Festival of Wine in Romania), that gathers wine producers from all over Romania and abroad.
