U.S. average IPO return in 2018, by sector Consumer staples was the best sector for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States in 2018, with an average return of 30.4 percent. The lowest returns were in the utilities sector, where the average loss was 44.2 percent. Industrials did not fare much better, with an average loss of 43.7 percent.

An IPO is when a private company offers shares to the public for the first time through a stock exchange. Companies do this to raise money, but public companies are subject to more scrutiny, such as publishing quarterly reports for investors. There are also risks.
