Leading asset managers – additional information

Seven of the top eight asset management companies, in terms of the amount of managed assets, were from the United States and the one that tops the list may be surprising or unknown to those who do not follow the financial world closely – BlackRock. BlackRock, with managed assets amounting to 6.29 trillion U.S. dollars was the largest asset manager globally in 2018. Trailing behind BlackRock with 4.94 trillion U.S. dollars in managed assets was the Vanguard Group, which is followed by the State Street with 2.78 trillion U.S. dollars in managed assets.

BlackRock was founded in 1988 and in a span of less than 25 years, it has become one of the leading players on the financial market. It also avoided a bail-out during the financial crisis, at which time it also played a role in advising the American government. BlackRock also tops the list when it comes to its market share of the largest Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) providers in the United States.

The largest banks worldwide by market capitalization, such as JP Morgan Chase, Well’s Fargo and ICBC, and by assets were surprisingly not among the top five asset management companies in terms of managed assets.
