Tonne-kilometers of freight transported by inland waterway in Germany 2006-2021

The inland waterway freight transport volume in Germany decreased by 4.6 billion tonne-kilometers (-9.04%) in 2020 in comparison to the previous year. This marks the lowest transport volume during the observed period and coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2021 freight transport by inland waterways began to recover but was still below pre-pandemic freight volumes.
