Whatever the product, be it clothing, books, or travel services, the majority of Canadian digital buyers made their online purchases through both domestic and international websites, while it was also found, that approximately 37 percent were devoted solely to domestic e-tailers as of 2018. In regards to digital payments, the preferred method according to 51 percent of online shoppers was credit or charge card. PayPal ranked second, with 30 percent of respondents indicating this payment as their favorite.

When it comes to device usage, online shopping was predominately done via desktops, across all age groups. Mobile shopping, however, was more popular among younger consumers. Among Canadian Millennials, 33 percent have made digital purchases using smartphones and 22 percent did so via tablets.

Despite not making it to the top ten global markets with the highest online shopping penetration, Canada’s e-commerce market is relatively strong. It was calculated, that in 2014 there were 20.2 million digital buyers in the country. This number is predicted to reach 22.5 million digital shoppers by the end of 2018. According to a 2014 study, it was found that Canadians aged 18 to 34 had the highest digital buyer penetration with 92 percent, and those between the ages of 35 and 54 were among the national average of 82 percent.
