Card payments at POS in the euro area 2000-2022

The amount of payment transactions at point of sale (POS) terminals with cards issued in the Eurozone countries has been on the rise between 2000 and 2020. The number of payments at terminals increased from nearly 33 billion local card payments in 2018 to over 36.1 billion in 2019.

This development goes hand in hand with the rise in POS terminals in the Eurozone between 2015 and 2019. In the final year, there were almost 11.7 million POS terminals in the Eurozone.
