This statistic displays the number of 24-hour mental health hospitals and residential treatment facilities in the United States in 1990, 2000, and 2008, by facility type. In 1990, there were 464 private psychiatric hospitals. As of 2011, over 41 million adults in the country had a mental illness and up to 9 million of these individuals had an illness that greatly affected their day-to-day living.
