Registered passenger cars in Hungary 1990-2022

In the period of consideration, the stock of passenger cars presented a trend of continuous growth. In 2022, the number of registered passenger cars in Hungary peaked at 4.09 million vehicles. 

Road transportation in Hungary

Passenger cars are undoubtedly Hungarians’ favorite mode of road transportation, as in 2022, the volume of private car passenger transport peaked at 73 billion passenger kilometers. In the same year, passenger cars accounted for 74 percent of passenger kilometers traveled by land in Hungary, while buses and coaches ranked second with 15 percent of passenger kilometers.

Passenger car registrations in Hungary

As of 2023, approximately 108,000 passenger cars were registered in Hungary, representing a decrease compared to the previous year. The number of passenger car registrations peaked in 2019 at around 158,000 and continued on a decreasing trend over the following years.
