Fresh cheese volume produced in France 2009-2018

This timeline gives an overview of the volume of fresh cheese produced from cow’s milk in France from 2009 to 2018, which appears to have decreased over the years: from more than 660,000 tons in 2014 to just about 600,000 tons in 2018. Fresh cheese was the most important type of cheese within the total French cow’s milk cheese production, which amounted to more than 1.7 million tons in 2018.

  Although cow’s cheese was the most produced type of cheese, the production of goat cheese has increased over the past years: from almost 95,000 tons in 2012 to more than 101,000 tons in 2018. In 2018, France exported more than 679,000 tons of cheese, while almost 895,000 tons were sold on the retail market in France in 2017.

Cheese consumption in France

  Known for their consumption of dairy products, the French appear to largely enjoy consuming cheese regularly: more than half of the respondents in a survey from 2019 declared eating some cheese daily or several times a week. However, while people aged older than 50 years old were more than 90 percent to answer consuming cheese at least once a week, they were just about 70 percent of people aged less than 35 years old to say so.
