Food is an important part of every person’s life, and the Spaniards know this very well. As of January 2018, Spain could reckon on its more than 30 thousand food and beverage companies to enjoy the country’s Mediterranean flavors. Andalusia, being one of Spain’s largest regions, had the largest number of this type of company in 2018, with nearly 5.8 thousand companies. Catalonia ranked second on the list with its figures amounting to nearly four thousand food and beverage companies.

The food and beverage sector in Spain

The food and beverage industry generated an annual average turnover of around 40 billion euros over the recent years, with the latest record registering approximately 44.3 billion euros in 2016. As for consumption, it is worth noting that Spaniards were consuming more oil products at home with an increase of 3.1 percent in November of 2018 compared to the same month the previous year, with an increase of 3.1 percent. The trend with soft drinks and sodas was however downwards, with an at-home consumption drop of 4 percent as of November 2018.

The Spanish tradition of eating at home

The average Spaniard spent much more on their at-home food and drinks than eating out. At-home expenditure in Spain stood at approximately 67.5 billion euros in 2017, with very similar figures for previous years. The annual away-from-home food and beverage expenditure experienced a downward trend in recent years, hitting a record low in 2014 at 31.6 billion euros. The sector however picked up in 2015, and by 2017 the expenditure on food and beverages away from home reached over 35 billion euros.
