Tequila industry
Tequila is an agave-based distilled spirit from Mexico. This alcoholic beverage is exclusively produced in the Mexican state of Jalisco and in a couple of municipalities in Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit and Tamaulipas.
In the United States, the three leading tequila brands accounted for about a third of the country’s total tequila volume sales in 2023. That year, approximately 31.6 million 9-liter cases of tequila were purchased by U.S. consumers. California and Texas were the largest tequila-consuming states. More than 20 percent of the nation’s tequila consumption was accounted for by the former and 12 percent by the latter. Californians and Texans have consistently been increasing tequila their consumption for over a decade. Both federal states share a border with Mexico.
The production volume of tequila in Mexico has grown drastically to meet the rising demand. Although 2023 saw a decline compared to 2022, production volume was still 60 percent greater than in 2020. Blanco tequila, the segment that receives little to no aging, accounts for nearly half of Mexico's tequila sales value.
