France: number of same-sex marriages 2013-2018

Number of same-sex marriages in France between 2013 and 2018

by Statista Research Department, last edited Jun 20, 2019
France: number of same-sex marriages 2013-2018 On May 17, 2013 France became the 9th European country and the 14th country in the world to allow gay marriage. Only few days after the legalization, the first same-sex marriage was celebrated in the southern city of Montpellier.
The decline in the number of gay marriages

The number of gay marriages reached a record number of more than 10, 000 unions in 2014. Only a year after the legalization of same-sex marriage, the enthusiasm of couples who were not previously allowed to marry each other was still high. Since then the number of gay marriages has been decreasing gradually, falling to 6,000 nuptials in 2018, while marriages between individuals of different sexes do not decline. Even though France was second ranking when it comes to the number of marriages in Europe in 2016, the country also had a divorce rate of 51.2 per every 100 marriages.

The popularity of civil partnerships

Implemented in 1999, the civil partnership (called PACS in French) provided unmarried couples of different or same-sex to organize their life together. If the number of gay marriages is declining in France, the number of civil partnerships contracted between same-sex couples is increasing. In 2017 more than 7,000 same-sex civil partnerships were signed in the country. A trend also observed in other European countries like Belgium.
