This statistic illustrates the percentage of the total licensed cars in Great Britain between 2001 and 2016, for which the levels of carbon dioxide emissions are not known. Prior to 2001, vehicle excise duty for cars was based on engine size, but has since been revised to reflect carbon dioxide emission levels. This can explain the reduction in the proportion of cars with unknown emission levels, because all cars that have been registered since 2001 must specify an approximate carbon dioxide emission level.
