Retail sales of sports and energy drinks in Canada were forecast to reach around 1.03 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, an increase of around 0.2 billion U.S. dollars in sales since 2017. Within this category, the highest selling type of drink in 2022 is forecast to be fortified or functional energy drinks, with sales expected to amount to around 604 million U.S. dollars.
What is the difference between sports and energy drinks?
The main purpose of sports drinks is to hydrate consumers by replacing water and electrolytes which may have been lost during and/or after physical activity. In contrast, energy drinks are any beverage which contains stimulant compounds such as caffeine, sugar or vitamins. They are generally marketed as being able to enhance mental and physical stimulation and boost energy levels.
Well-known international energy drink brands
Red Bull is likely to be a brand which comes to mind when thinking about energy drinks. Their worldwide revenue reached around 6.3 billion euros in 2017, with Turkey leading the pack when it came to sales growth in that year. Monster Beverage Corporation is another leading player in the global energy drinks market. Their net sales totaled 3.37 billion U.S. dollars worldwide in 2017.
