Credit card payments in Poland
The share of non-cash transactions in Poland in the second quarter of 2020 amounted to nearly 92 percent. At the end of 2020, Polish banks issued over 5.42 million credit cards, maintaining a downward trend since the beginning of the year. The most significant number of credit cards were issued by PKO BP for individual customers, while for small and medium-sized enterprises - ING Bank Śląski. Payments with bank cards in Poland reach a higher value from year to year. At the end of 2020, the value of these payments amounted to nearly 213 billion zloty. Ninety-three percent of transactions in Poland are made with debit cards. Credit cards comprise only 6.4 percent of the market share. Nevertheless, the value of credit card payments amounted to over 11 billion zloty at the end of 2020.
Contactless payments in Poland
Contactless payments are becoming increasingly popular in Poland. Their number at the end of the second quarter of 2021 increased by 20 percent during the year and reached over 94 billion zloty. The most popular mobile payment system in Poland is BLIK. BLIK is a service that appeared in Poland in 2015. It enables smartphone users to make payments in stationary and online shops by generating a six-digit code to confirm transactions. It also allows for withdrawing and depositing cash at ATMs and making immediate interbank transfers. 2021 was a record year for BLIK. The number of BLIK transactions increased by nearly 80 percent compared to 2020.
