Netflix was considered an essential video service by almost double the share of respondents who felt this way about satellite television. Just 28 percent of surveyed U.S. and Canadian adults deemed satellite TV to be an essential service, pushing it close to the bottom of the list of priorities below rental shows and movies, Amazon Prime Video and even cable.

DirecTV Now increased its subscriber numbers from 200 thousand at the end of 2016 to almost 1.6 million by the final quarter of 2018, reflecting the changing preferences of U.S. consumers and their tendency to migrate to streaming platforms from satellite and cable providers.
