U.S.-based Netflix is one of the leading streaming providers in the world, with more than 83 million streaming subscribers worldwide as of the second quarter of 2016. Global figures have been on the rise in the last few years thanks to Netflix’s global expansion strategy. Despite the increasing popularity of the streaming provider worldwide, Netflix’s domestic market, the U.S., still remains their main market, as about 58 percent of American internet users stated using Netflix. The U.S. is projected to continue to be Netflix’s leading market in the coming years, as the number of Netflix users in the U.S. is forecast to jump from an estimate of 114 million in 2015 to 143 million in 2019.
Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Ireland complete the top 5 most important markets for the streaming provider. Netflix has developed a significant user base in Mexico since the company entered the Mexican market in 2011; about half of internet users in Mexico have stated using their services as of the second quarter of 2016. By 2020, the number of Netflix subscribers in Mexico is forecast to pass the 10 million mark. The penetration rate of Netflix amongst internet users both in Canada and Brazil adds up to nearly 50 percent as well. In these two countries, 47 percent of internet users had used Netflix. The number of Netflix paying streaming subscribers in Canada stood at nearly four million in 2015, whereas in Brazil, there was an estimate of 7.7 million Netflix subscribers that year. The country is forecast to remain one of the most important markets for the company, as about 24.4 million Netflix subscribers are expected to be located in Brazil by 2020.
