Free standing insert (FSI) coupons – additional information

The use of coupons for shopping is a common practice in the U.S., as consumers are often looking for deals to save money. Free standing insert (FSI) coupons are coupon booklets or brochures inserted into a newspaper or a magazine. This type of consumer sales promotion mainly reaches subscribers of the news outlet, as they are only found on newspaper or magazines for delivery.

In 2015, 286 billion free standing insert (FSI) coupons were distributed in the United States, a figure that is similar to the previous years. FSI coupons are usually divided into two main categories: food and non-food FSI coupons. The number of food FSI coupons has slightly decreased over the years, going from about 102 billion in 2013 to 89.8 billion in 2015. On the other hand, the number of non-food FSI coupons has increased during the time same period. In 2013, non-food FSI coupons totaled 185 billion. About 198 billion non-food free standing coupons were distributed in the U.S. in 2015, accounting for nearly 70 percent of all FSI coupons in the country.

In 2015, consumers in the U.S. were offered about 515 billion U.S. dollars through FSI coupons. This figure shows a considerable growth from the previous year, when the cumulative value of FSI coupons stood at 496 billion U.S. dollars. The average face value of free standing insert (FSI) coupons offered in the United States has slightly increased in the last few years as well. The face value of FSI jumped from 1.63 U.S. dollars in 2013 to 1.8 U.S. dollars in 2015.
