Average price of cigarettes in Germany 1964-2018

Average price of cigarettes in Germany from 1964 to 2018 (in cents)

by Evgeniya Koptyug, last edited May 24, 2019
Average price of cigarettes in Germany 1964-2018 Cigarettes in Germany have become increasingly more expensive, hitting 29 euro cents in 2018. A particular spike is visible between 2000 and 2005. In comparison to other countries around the world, however, German smokers might still be getting off cheap, in financial terms.
Up in smoke

The average daily use of taxed cigarettes in Germany has been sinking in the last ten years. If in 2004, 305 million cigarettes were smoked, by 2018 the number had fallen to 204 million. Health considerations as well as financial ones typically influence cigarette consumption trends among the population, and with healthy lifestyle suggestions becoming more and more mainstream, it’s no wonder that consumption levels are falling.

Which EU country lights up the most?

Among European countries, Germany does not have the highest share of individuals smoking. The top three nations in this case are Greece, France and Bulgaria. Cigarette prices are ruled by specific taxes imposed within a country. In Germany, revenues from the tobacco tax amounted to over 14 billion euros in 2017.
