Geothermal energy – additional information

The worldwide consumption of energy has increased steadily over the last decades. Growing population and increasing standards of living in developing countries will place even more demand on energy resources. Furthermore, the carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels had grown rapidly and contributed to environmental problems, such as climate change, global warming and poor air quality.

Many technologies have been developed to take advantage of clean and renewable energy resources, such as solar, wind or hydroelectric power, and geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is derived from heat from the Earth which is then converted into electricity. The Earth’s internal heat is produced by magma which is heated by its natural radioactive decay and can be used for the heating and cooling of buildings. Geothermal resources are generally considered as environmental friendly, clean and sustainable.

Geothermal energy is one of the main renewable energy sources used to generate electricity in the United States. According to the Stanford University, U.S. geothermal capacity totaled 3.45 terawatts in 2015. The country had the largest cumulative installed geothermal capacity in 2015. Compared to other renewable sources, the geothermal power capacity in the U.S. has remained relatively stable since 2000. However, most geothermal power plants are located in the western states, with California producing the most geothermal electricity.
