Android gaming apps – additional information
Mobile gaming has become ubiquitous in popular culture today, perhaps even more so than some of its traditional console and PC gaming counterparts. Smartphone gaming generated 17 billion U.S. dollars in global revenue in 2014, but this number is projected to grow steadily to over 30 billion U.S. dollars by 2018, contributing a quarter of total games market revenue worldwide by that time.
As of March 2017, top android gaming apps are Subway Surfers, Candy Crush Saga and Temple Run 2. Subway Surfers, the most popular game on Google Play, attracted almost one in every four persons on the Android platform to try their hands at guiding their characters around trains and over obstacles. What is more, the game was not only well-received on the Android platform, it had an even greater share of worldwide iPhone users, reaching more than 33 percent of iOS mobile users during the same period. Rounding out the top three games on Apple iOS are Hay Day and Highway Rider, which both failed to replicate the same success in terms of market reach on the Android platform.
Despite its global popularity, Subway Surfers did not feature in the top 10 mobile game titles worldwide in revenue. In 2015, Clash of Clans generated more than 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, landing a top spot on the global ranking of the highest grossing gaming apps. Candy Crush Saga, which ranked second, based on market reach on Android devices, was identified as the fourth most grossing mobile game that same year, with about 680 million U.S. dollars received in revenue.
