Lung transplants in the United Kingdom (UK) 2018/19

138 of the total 164 lung transplant procedures in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2018/19 were carried out on patients living in England. Scotland had fourteen lung transplantations carried out, followed by Wales with eight procedures and four in Northern Ireland.

Meeting demand?

At the end of March 2019, there were still 347 patients on the lung transplant waiting list in the UK, around 280 of which were in England. Additionally, in this year, 63 patients in the UK died while on the organ transplant list waiting for a lung transplant.

European contrasts

The UK has a low rate of lung transplants when evaluated alongside most other European nations. At a rate of three lung transplants per one million population in 2017, the UK was the fourth lowest in the EU. Austria had the highest rate of lung transplants in this year, at 13.3 per million population.
