Supplementary notes

The Youth Violent Crime Severity Index (Youth Violent CSI) takes into account both the volume and the seriousness of youth violent crime. In the calculation of the Youth Violent CSI, each youth violent offence is assigned a weight derived from average sentences handed down by criminal courts. The more serious the average sentence, the higher the weight for that offence. As a result, more serious offences have a greater impact on changes in the index. All police-reported youth violent Criminal Code offences are included in the Youth Violent CSI.
A youth is defined here as a person 12 to 17 years of age. Adapted from Statistics Canada, statcan.gc.ca, 2001 to 2022. This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product.
