New marriages in Sweden 2019, by age group

The number of newlyweds in Sweden amounted to about 89 thousand in 2019, a lower number than the ten previous years. The most common age for newlyweds was from 30 to 34 years of age, with a around 21 thousand individuals marrying in 2019. The second and third most common age groups for newlyweds were 25 to 29 year-olds, and 35 to 39 year-olds.

Increasing average age at first marriage

In Sweden, the average age at first marriage for both women and men increased from 2009 to 2019. Among women it increased by 1.4 years during this period to 33.9 years in 2019. For men the age increase was not as large as for women, and increased by 1.2 years within the years 2009 to 2019, reaching an average age of 36.3 years when marrying for the first time.

Average length of a marriage

The average length of a marriage in Sweden in 2019 was 46.8 years if it lasted until it was dissolved by death. For marriages that ended in divorce, the average length was 11.4 years.
