Employment in public sector in Sweden 2018, by age group The public sector in Sweden is large compared to many other countries. It consists of the central government and the municipal sector. In 2018 around 1.5 million people were employed in the public sector. Most of the employees were found in the municipal sector, and the most common age groups for both municipal and central government employees was 25 to 54 years old.
Most employees employed in the private sector

      However, most of Sweden’s employed inhabitants worked in the private sector in 2018, amounting to around 3.1 million individuals. The municipal sector was the second largest, with around 1.2 million employees, while the central government had around three hundred thousand employees.   

Lower salary in public than private sector

    The average monthly salary in the public sector in Sweden is lower than in the private sector and amounted to 32,300 Swedish kronor in 2018. During the same year, the average monthly salary in the private sector was 34,300 Swedish kronor.
