Rate of inflation food and non-alcoholic beverages in Belgium 2018-2023

Statistics Belgium defines the Consumption price index (CPI) as an economic indicator meant to objectively present the evolution of the price of a basket of food and services purchased by families and seen as representative of their consumer habits. The index number does not really measure the price level of this basket but rather the fluctuation of the price level between two periods of time for which the first period of time is seen as the basis of the comparison. This change is measured in relative numbers. The index can be defined as a hundred times the change rate between the perceived prices of a basket of goods and services at a certain point in time and the prices of the same goods and services perceived under different circumstances during the reference period. Since 2014, the reference period is reguarly changed and the prices are not compared to a constant reference period anymore but to a period in between. By multiplying these short term index numbers and therefore forming a chain, a long term series with a constant reference period.
