Coffee in Canada - additional information

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Once brewed, coffee may be served in a variety of ways; from simple coffees like espresso and filter coffee, to more complex recipes like cappuccino or latte macchiato. Nearly five million 60-kilogram bags of coffee were consumed by Canadians in the marketing year 2015/2016. It should come as no surprise then that coffee appeared to be the most popular hot beverage among Canadians in 2014, with a market share of 67 percent.

The coffee market in Canada is lead by three large coffee chains, Tim Hortons, Starbucks and the Second Cup. The multinational franchise restaurant Tim Hortons, headquartered in the Canadian province of Ontario, is by far the leading coffee chain in Canada. The company operated around 4,413 restaurants across the country and generated approximately four billion Canadian dollars in revenue in 2016. Founded in 1964, Tim Hortons’ first stores originally offered only two products – coffee and donuts. Today, the company has a wider variety of offerings focused on fresh coffee and baked goods, including bagels, sandwiches, breakfast items, cakes, and various types of coffee.

The overall coffee industry in Canada has risen steadily since 2010. The revenue was forecasted to reach around 10.6 billion Canadian dollars by 2019, with more than eight thousand establishments during the same year.
