Steam game sales revenue 2014-2017

Revenue generated by game sales on Steam from 2014 to 2017 (in billion U.S. dollars)

by Christina Gough, last edited May 22, 2019
Steam game sales revenue 2014-2017 First released in 2003 by Valve Corporation, Steam is now the go-to PC gaming platform for gamers across the world. Through releasing its first-party games and other offerings from third-party developers and publishers, Steam generated 4.3 billion U.S. dollars in game sales in 2017. This marks a dramatic increase from the 1.5 billion U.S. dollars of revenue generated in 2014.
Steam still going strong

Despite fierce competition from console rivals, Steam still manages to hold on to a loyal legion of fans. The platform added approximately 62.76 million new users in 2017, nearly 2.5 million more than in the previous year. What started off as a small platform for Valve to provide updates for its games has turned into a worldwide gaming phenomenon. In October 2018, Steam reached a peak of 18.5 million concurrent users, a dramatic increase from the six million in November 2012.

Steam’s biggest game

There are a staggering amount of games released each year on Steam, with over 9,000 alone arriving on the platform in 2018. These games can vary from classic shooter games to farming simulators, yet it is a very small fraction of the games that bring in the big bucks. Of all the blockbuster games available on Steam, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds comes out on top. The battle royale game has been purchased by upwards of 50 million gamers and, despite being released back in 2017, remains the most popular game on the gaming platform. It generated revenue of 600 million U.S. dollars on Steam in 2017, five times the amount of its closest competitor, Counter Strike: Global Offensive. PUBG regularly peaks at over one million concurrent players each month and reached its peak in January 2018, when 3.24 million players were recorded to be playing at the same time.
