Coffee and tea are the two most popular hot beverages in Germany. As far as drinking tea is concerned, teabags are preferred, compared to drinking loose tea.

The majority of tea is sold by food retailers and in discount supermarkets, which both accounted for more than half of tea sales in Germany. Specialist tea retailers were another shopping source for tea drinkers. When going into more detail about favorite tea types among German consumers, herbal and fruit teas were in the lead, as long as they came in tea bags. In total, per capita tea and coffee consumption have decreased during recent years, amounting to 6.3 liters in 2018.

Tea imports to Germany

Germany imports its tea from several different countries. The leading import partners were India, China and Sri Lanka. Tea import value had increased noticeably during recent years, at over 3,880 euros per ton in 2018.

This statistic is based on a combination of different variables of the survey. Questions were not asked directly. Respondents had to state how often they consumed each of the given coffee and tea drinks. This statistic includes the share of respondents, who answered with drinking "more than once a day", "daily", "more than once a week" or "weekly".
