Although the number of healthcare institutions in Estonia has decreased, the number of personnel working within them have remained stable. The number of physicians in Estonia in the period 2000 to 2020 has held steady, not changing by more than three hundred employees. In addition, the number of practicing nurses experienced more fluctuations over the time period, yet amounted to over eight thousand in 2018, which was an increase on the preceding five years.
Spending indicators on health
Estonia’s expenditure on healthcare was 8.1 percent of GDP in 2020, this share has generally been increasing since 2002. In comparison to other European countries, Estonia ranked rather low on the share of GDP spent on health expenditures. Germany had the highest share of expenditure on health, spending 12.8 percent of its GDP in this year.
