Most popular radio stations in Finland in 2020, by audience share

In 2020, Yle Radio Suomi remained the most popular radio station in Finland, increasing its audience share to 34 percent. The second most popular radio station was the commercial channel Radio Nova, with an audience share of 10 percent, followed by Yle Radio 1, Radio Suomipop, and Radio Rock.

How much time do people spend listening to radio?

Other audio platforms have increased in popularity at the expense of radio listening in Finland. However, radio listening still accounts for nearly 80 percent of the audio listening time. Although the consumption of audio platforms, such as Spotify, YouTube, podcast and audiobook services, has steadily increased, the daily radio listening time among Finns was two hours and 34 minutes as of 2020.

Mobile listening on the rise

Digital services and mobile devices have contributed to the high weekly reach of radio. Almost all Finnish radio channels are available online, and young people especially use their smartphones to listen to the radio. Based on survey results from 2020, nearly 40 percent of under 25-year-olds listened to the radio on their phone. Nonetheless, 79 percent of Finns preferred using a good old receiver despite the digitalization of radio broadcasting.

Supplementary notes

The source adds the following information: "This statistic is based on an annual national radio survey. Radio listening is measured using diaries. The respondents mark their radio listening by drawing a line to the diary that identifies the station and listening time. The annual national sample size is about 21,000 diaries. There is a 7 day study wave every week and approximately 52 waves each year, which enables KRT to provide data about radio listening evenly throughout the year."

Percentage points exceeding 100 percent are probably due to rounding.

The results have been weighted to represent the entire population.
