Trader Joe’s is a U.S. chain of specialty grocery stores headquartered in California. The first Trader Joe’s store opened for operations in Pasadena in 1967. At that time, the company was known for selling local wines. In the 1990s, Trader Joe’s ventured outside the California state and began opening stores in Arizona, Oregon and Washington. By 1995, the company established its 70th store. Trader Joe’s continued its expansion in the Midwest and Southeast regions during the early to mid-2000s.

In 2007, Trader Joe’s committed to selling “healthier” food by eliminating artificial trans fats, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives and GMO ingredients from all of its private label products. In 2015, the grocery chain’s estimated sales amounted to approximately 8.27 billion U.S. dollars. Trader Joe’s total sales are expected to reach 9.67 billion U.S. by 2021. The privately held company employed approximately 9,200 people in over 450 stores across the country in 2016.
