In 2021, nearly 280,000 of the 368,792 people living in Iceland that year had no foreign background, whereas over 57,000 were immigrants. Approximately 6,600 inhabitants were born abroad, but had an Icelandic background. All in all, in recent years the share of the population with a foreign citizenship increased.
