In 2022, over 280,000 of the 376,248 people living in Iceland that year had no foreign background, whereas over 61,000 were immigrants. Approximately 6,800 inhabitants were born abroad, but had an Icelandic background. All in all, in recent years the share of the population with a foreign citizenship increased.
