Distribution of payment services in the total number of payments in Belgium from 2010 to 2018
Distribution of payment services in the total number of payments in Belgium 2010-2018
This statistic shows the distribution of payment services in the total number of payments in Belgium from 2010 to 2018. In 2018, direct debit payments consisted of approximately 12 percent of all payments in Belgium. The most payments, however, were made with cards issued by resident PSPs. Card payments with cards issued by resident PSPs reached approximately 48 percent of Belgian payments in 2017.

Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases in the Benelux region. In 2016, Luxembourg had approximately 216 card payments per capita compared to 151 in Belgium and 232 in the Netherlands.

Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. Domestic uses, however, appear to be few due to the presence of other popular payment services, with credit cards generally being used for specific situations such as online shopping or foreign travels.
