Total loans from MFIs to households in the Benelux countries 2023, by loan type
In the Benelux countries, that is Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg, mortgages made up most of the outstanding value of loans to households as of September 2023. Monetary financial institutions in the Netherlands loaned approximately 559 billion euros to individuals for house purchases, but only 9 billion euros for consumer credit, and 21 billion euros for other loans. Luxembourg was the country were those disparities between the types of loans were less significant. Between 1995 and 2021, the total mortgage debt from households in the Netherlands increased significantly.
