Number of Japanese applications under the PCT 2011-2020
In 2020, Japan handed in more than 50 thousand Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the second highest number of the past decade. Over the observed period, patent applications from Japan increased almost every year until they peaked in 2019 at around 52.7 thousand.
