International hotel guests in the Netherlands 2018, by city

In 2018, international hotel guests in the Netherlands were much more likely to stay overnight in Amsterdam than in any other major city in the country. Over seven million international guests made use of hotel accommodations in the capital city of the Netherlands, whereas approximately 600,000 and 530,000 people stayed at hotels in Rotterdam and The Hague, respectively. Observing the number of domestic hotel guests by major cities in the Netherlands, Amsterdam attracted roughly 2.8 million Dutch people staying at hotel accommodations, whereas Maastricht had 663,000 hotel guests.

Average hotel price per night in Amsterdam increased annually

Regarding the origin of hotel guests in Amsterdam in 2017, most came from Great Britain, United States and Germany (excluding domestic guests). Approximately 1.27 British tourists visited the canal city and stayed at hotel accommodations, whereas Amsterdam registered 940,000 U.S. and 838,000 German hotel guests in 2017. The average price that had to be paid per night in hotels in Amsterdam grew steadily. In 2017, 156 euros had to be paid per night, whereas by 2018 it was forecasted that it increased to 162 euros a night.

Average one room Airbnb rates significantly cheaper compared to hotels

The average daily rate of a one room Airbnb apartment in Amsterdam costed 123 euros a night in 2017. Comparing it to the average hotel price in the same city, it saves tourists 33 euros a night. In a relative short period of time, Airbnb has established themselves as a serious competitor to the hotel sector and transformed the hospitality industry around the world. Looking at the price differences between Airbnb and hotels, tourists can profit from the competitive environment. However, it is causing a debate as well whether this is creating urban inequality due to the company’s rapid growth.
